MIDDLETOWN — A city man was charged after reportedly punching and choking his wife as they argued about their “open relationship,” police said.

The victim reportedly became upset when she found out her husband’s “girl on the side” was involved with other people, according to the arrest report. She was seemingly upset because she didn’t want to see her husband get hurt, police said.

After confronting her husband about the situation, an argument broke out about the relationship.

The accused, Angel Caraballo, 29, allegedly told police that he struck his wife with a “slightly closed fist” on Jan. 20. A day later, the couple began to argue again, police said. This time Caraballo allegedly pushed the victim onto a couch, climbed on top of her and started choking her. The woman said she could not breathe but was eventually able to free herself and fled to a neighbor’s house, where she called police.

Caraballo was charged with third-degree assault and second-degree strangulation. He was released from custody after posting a $25,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in Middletown Superior Court at a later date.

Caraballo has past convictions for assault, disorderly and use of drug paraphernalia, according to court records.
